Sorry, ASOS – I’ve Got a New Lover

By Lou.

ASOS, I’ve been loyal. So loyal, in fact, that I’ve been around since the days when you were called As Seen On Screen. When you sold Sienna Miller-esque coin belts and that yellow picture frame that Monica and Rachel have over their peephole.

But things have changed. If I’m honest, it’s been happening for a while, but I didn’t want to admit it. The frisson of excitement I used to feel when clicking ‘NEW IN’ has gone. I knew things were over when I couldn’t be arsed scrolling through 4573 options to find a Christmas party dress. And therein lies part of the problem – too much choice. I find the refine options pretty useless, the site is glitchy on my work desktop (wtf am I meant to do on my lunch break?), and I just don’t love the clothes as much anymore. There’s no consistency, and instead I find myself gravitating towards brands where I know what I’m getting – ASOS tries to be a one-stop shop for every kind of person, which just makes it a nightmare to shop from.

Enter NastyGal. I used to like it when it was still Sophia Amoruso’s baby, but after she sold it to Boohoo, I wasn’t convinced it was for me anymore. Since then, the site has well and truly hit its stride and I’ve found myself shopping from it more and more. Its got a distinct sense of style which suits my own, it’s cheap, yet the quality is decent, and the choice isn’t overwhelming. I can browse every dress in 10 minutes instead of 10 hours. The styling is cool and clever. There’s every kind of knitted basic you’ll ever need, yet unique going-out stuff too.

My experience of delivery and returns has been good, and I’m now considering signing up for NGVIP – a year of next-day delivery for £7.99.
